Lydia & Joe's Beautiful Wedding at Michelham Priory

One of the greatest privileges of being an East Sussex wedding photographer is documenting weddings at some of the county's most historic venues, and few are as unique as Michelham Priory.

Dating back over 800 years, Michelham Priory combines stunning medieval architecture, beautiful gardens and peaceful surroundings, making it one of the most picturesque places to get married in Sussex. Every corner of the venue offers beautiful opportunities for natural wedding photography, from the famous moat and historic buildings to the colourful walled gardens and sweeping lawns.

Lydia and Joe's wedding perfectly showcased everything that makes Michelham Priory such a special wedding venue.

A Relaxed Start to the Day in Buxted

The day began just a few miles away in Buxted, where Lydia spent the morning getting ready surrounded by her family and closest friends.

There was a wonderfully calm atmosphere throughout the morning, filled with excitement, laughter and those quiet moments that often become some of the most treasured memories of a wedding day.

One of my favourite moments before the ceremony was watching Lydia leave for Michelham Priory with her dad in his beautifully presented BMW. It was such a personal touch and made for some lovely photographs before they set off for the ceremony.

These relaxed moments are exactly why I love documentary wedding photography—they're genuine, emotional and impossible to recreate.

An Outdoor Wedding Ceremony at Michelham Priory

With warm sunshine arriving in early May, Lydia and Joe were able to hold their ceremony outside in the beautiful gardens at Michelham Priory.

Surrounded by around seventy of their closest family and friends, the ceremony was incredibly heartfelt from beginning to end. There were smiles, tears, laughter and countless small moments that unfolded naturally throughout the vows.

My approach as a Michelham Priory wedding photographer is always to blend into the background, allowing couples to enjoy every second of their day while quietly documenting everything as it happens.

Rather than interrupting events or over-directing people, I simply capture genuine moments as they unfold naturally.

Portraits in the Walled Garden

After congratulations and drinks in the sunshine, we took advantage of one of Michelham Priory's most beautiful locations—the historic walled garden.

The combination of mature planting, old brick walls and soft spring light created the perfect backdrop for relaxed couple portraits.

Nothing felt rushed or overly posed. Instead, Lydia and Joe were simply able to enjoy a few peaceful moments together while I documented their connection naturally.

These are often the photographs couples tell me become their favourites.

Group Photographs on the Front Lawns

The impressive lawns in front of Michelham Priory provided the perfect location for family group photographs.

With the historic priory creating a spectacular backdrop, everyone could comfortably gather together while still keeping the photography relaxed and enjoyable.

Organising groups efficiently means couples can quickly return to spending time with their guests, which is always one of my priorities throughout the day.

Celebrating Inside the Beautiful Barn

Following the outdoor celebrations, guests moved into Michelham Priory's beautifully restored barn for the wedding breakfast.

The speeches were filled with emotion and laughter before the celebrations continued into the evening with dancing and plenty of memorable moments on the dance floor.

From the excitement of the first dance to guests enjoying themselves late into the evening, the entire day perfectly reflected Lydia and Joe's personalities.

It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to photograph such a wonderful celebration.
