The Top 10 Things That Can Ruin Your Wedding Photos

(And how to dodge them like a pro)

Wedding photos are meant to be timeless. Not “why is there a high-vis jacket in every group shot?” timeless. After photographing more weddings than I’ve had hot dinners, a few repeat offenders turn up time and time again. Thankfully, most are easy to avoid once you know what to look out for.

1. Harsh Midday Sun

The sun is wonderful. Squinting like you’re solving a riddle is not.

Midday ceremonies can create heavy shadows, shiny foreheads and expressions that say “I wish I’d brought sunglasses.” Open shade, later timings or smart positioning make a world of difference.

2. Rushing to the Timeline

Relaxed couples photograph beautifully. Rushed couples look like they’re late for a ferry.

When the day is overpacked, photos get squeezed into awkward corners at lightning speed. Build in breathing room. Calm shows on faces far more than people realise.

3. “Unplugged” But Not Really

You asked nicely. Guests smiled. Phones still appeared.

Nothing breaks the magic of a key moment like a row of glowing screens. A clear announcement from the celebrant and a little trust in your photographer usually does the trick.

4. Busy Backgrounds

Your eye goes straight to the couple. Cameras notice everything else too.

Exit signs, fire extinguishers, stacked chairs and wandering guests can quietly steal attention from an otherwise perfect moment. Awareness and good positioning are worth their weight in gold.

5. Bad Weather Panic

Rain doesn’t ruin photos. Disappointment does.

Wind, drizzle and dramatic skies often create the most memorable images of the day. Embrace it. Umbrellas and laughter photograph far better than sulking indoors.

6. Overly Dark Venues

Atmospheric is great. Cave-like is trickier.

Low lighting and dark interiors need experience and proper equipment. Candles are lovely, but they are not a lighting strategy.

7. Stiff Posing

If it feels unnatural, it will look unnatural.

The best photos happen when you’re allowed to move, laugh and interact. Gentle guidance beats forced poses every time.

8. Forgotten or Disorganised Details

The small things tell the bigger story.

Shoes, rings, flowers and stationery often go missing just when they’re needed. Having them ready early avoids frantic searches and keeps the morning relaxed.

9. Poor Ceremony Positioning

Where you stand matters more than you think.

Couples accidentally turning their backs to guests, standing under harsh spotlights or being framed by speakers can impact photos instantly. A quick chat with your photographer or celebrant beforehand can prevent it entirely.

10. Choosing the Wrong Photographer

Style, experience and personality all count.

Your photographer is by your side for most of the day. If their approach doesn’t suit you, it will show. Choose someone whose work you love and whose presence feels calm and reassuring.

Final Thought

Most photo problems aren’t disasters, they’re tiny oversights. With thoughtful planning, realistic expectations and the right photographer, your wedding photos won’t just record the day. They’ll bring it rushing back, exactly as it felt.

And if something goes a little off-script? That’s usually where the magic hides.
